Judith Bishop

on entering the poem

As if a songbird, the mind flies into the poem

looking for an answer to her calls;

a farmer, she cultivates a memory field

where metaphors are tended

for a harvest of ideas;

a believer, she listens for the voice that speaks within her

from the edges of words

in a tongue that’s oddly foreign, and yet she understands.

The mind inside the poem is a child

and the words are a dance she wants to follow,

to the forest, to the sea,

whether joy, whether grief;

the mind in the poem is a dancer

dreaming of the source of the music, the minuscule musician

who wrote the score and left the poem

to play alone on stage.
